WHAT IS BAOBAB?
Baobab is a large tree that can grow to a height of about 5-30 meters. It grows in most African countries, including where we source our products, Ghana. The Baobab tree over the years has adapted to its environment which is usually dry and severely hit by climate change conditions, enabling its survival by absorbing and storing water in its trunk. This feat allows it to produce a nutrient-dense fruit even in the dry season where many trees fail to survive. The Baobab tree is known by some as the 'Monkey bread tree', others also know it as the 'Upside down tree’ (because its branches look like the roots of a tree). It is most popularly known as the 'TREE OF LIFE'. The Baobab tree has a lifespan of more than 500 years. The Baobab tree is rather unique because of how every part of the tree is useful:
- The bark can be turned into rope and clothing.
- The seed is edible and also used for cosmetic oils like Afrikinky Baobab Oil
- The trunk can store about 30,000 gallons of water to provide water for both humans and animals during drought seasons
- The fruit from this tree is how our Afrikinky Baobab Powder. is produced.
Fun fact: it is the only fruit in the world that dries naturally on its branch for months without decaying.
